Abrahams,
Mick Marmalade |
Cliff Bennett was born on 4 June 1940 in Slough. He formed the excellent Rebel Rousers in early 1961, taking their name from the Duane Eddy hit record. The original line up was Mick King (lead guitar), Frank Allen (bass), Sid Phillips (piano/saxophone) and Ricky Winters (drums). Unfortunately, the group made no impression on the charts with songs produced by Joe Meek In early in 1964, Frank Allen left the band to replace Tony Jackson in the Searchers. The Rebel Rousers continued their busy touring schedule at home and abroad and were finally rewarded with a Top 10 hit, "One Way Love" in November 1964 but unfortunately their follow up failed to reach the Top 30. A change of management to Brian Epstein's NEMs in the same stable as the Beatles, Paul McCartney stepped in to produce their sparkling reading of "Got To Get You Into My Life" from the recently released Revolver album which reached No. 6 in the charts. No more hits followed for the Cliff, who then changed the band's name to Cliff Bennett And His Band but by the middle of 1969 he had decided to dissolve the group completely. He re-emerged on the scene with on other bands but with no success. He left the business for several years returning but has kept his hand in still playing semi professionally. Singles
